What is “Ebisu Bag”?

Edo-era “Ebisu bags” were New Year lucky bags with hidden contents, enjoyed for the thrill of opening and the chance of a “winner.” Rooted in Seven Lucky Gods belief and lottery culture, the bags’ auspicious designs symbolically “carried” good fortune home.

江戸の恵比寿袋は、正月やえびす講に配られた中身非公開の縁起物です。開封のドキドキと当たりで運試しを楽しみ、七福神信仰や富くじなどの文化が背景で、縁起意匠の袋を持ち帰り、福を「持ち運ぶ」象徴として親しまれました。
